Le 74e Festival de Venise (30 août-9 septembre) a ses jurys, ses hommages et désormais ses films en sélection officielle (compétition, hors compétition et section Orizzonti). Outre quelques films événementiels de cinéastes renommés, on constate un fort contingent italien (logique), américain (il y a même du lourd parmi les 7 films en compétition) et français. 6 productions ou coproductions françaises concourent pour le Lion d'or, auxquelles on ajoutera 7 films produits ou coproduits par la France toutes sections confondues. De Guédiguian à Fontaine, en passant par Bourdos et Kechiche, le cinéma hexagonal parie sur la diversité.

Il y a cependant quelques surprises. Le cinéma britannique est très bien représenté. A l'inverse les cinémas asiatiques et latino-américains sont étonnement absents. On note bien qu'il y a un Kore-eda en compétition et un Kitano hors compétition mais on remarque surtout que des cinéastes comme Lucrecia Martel, habituées aux compétitions cannoises, se retrouve hors-compet. Il n'y a que deux films argentins et un chilien dans la liste globale de la sélection officielle pour représenter l'Amérique latine.

Venise assure de beaux tapis rouges avec Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Kirsten Wiig, Jennifer Lawrence, Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Josh Brolin, Judi Dench, l'artiste Ai Xeiwei, Charlotte Rampling, Patrick Bruel, Pipppo Delbono, Amanda Seyfried, Donald Sutherland, Helen Mirren, Kad Merad, Matthias Schoenaerts, Adèle Exarchopoulos ou encore Sienna Miller.
